Season Topic:

People and Places That Build Community: Creating a Home Away From Home

This season of At Home, On Air, we will engage community builders and place-makers to highlight the vital role everyday spaces play in keeping us healthy and connected — from the neighborhood café and the front porch, to local parks and places of worship. These so-called “third spaces” are essential for community and individual well-being across all stages of life.

Our conversations will explore how inclusive design, thoughtful program offerings and mixed uses can make community spaces welcoming to people of all ages and abilities. We will also examine how activism and advocacy are sparking new models of community through affordable housing projects, grassroots organizing, and initiatives that prioritize connection across generations.

Now more than ever, as our population ages, such gathering places are essential. Join us as we discover the people and places that build communities where everyone—regardless of age or ability—can feel At Home With Growing Older.

Leading up to the live premiere on October 23, we invite you to find insights and new perspectives by exploring previous conversations with our expert guest speakers!

Listen to Episode 42 — The Surprising Power of Everyday Spaces for Our Health and Wellbeing

Jessica Finlay

“The goal is to think critically about neighborhoods to help inform policymaking and community service provisions to build better neighborhoods and to help support aging-in-place, particularly among underserved and underrepresented communities.”

“It’s not about taking away from one generation to give to another; it’s creatively building spaces for all of us, regardless of whether we’re 8 years old or 80 years old.”

Listen to Episode 22 — Aging in Many Places: Neighborhoods, Health, and Wellbeing in Later Life

Jennie Chin Hansen

Former President of AARP and Executive Director of OnLok

“Policy is very powerful; but policy by itself, if it’s not implemented, doesn’t mean a whole lot. It really takes the vision and then the hard work.”
