Impact Award

The At Home With Growing Older Impact Award honors individuals and organizations whose work has had a lasting positive impact on the experiences of later life through empowerment, education, advocacy, and activism and who have supported the mission and work of At Home With Growing Older. The award recipients are selected by At Home With Growing Older’s Board of Directors and are typically announced at the annual agein in June each year.

2024

Recipient: Howard Thornton, architect, AHWGO board member, Aging 360 program lead and facilitator

Honored for: Transforming the lives of formerly unhoused older adults at the Cadillac Hotel, one of San Francisco’s oldest Single Room Occupancy Hotels. As the lead facilitator of the Aging 360 workshop, Howard has diligently worked with older residents to help them create a home environment conducive to aging in place, promoting safety and joy. His unwavering dedication has earned him the trust and admiration of residents and staff alike. Beyond workshops, his regular participation in coffee hours and memorials solidifies his role as a cherished figure in the community.

2023

Recipient: Muttville Senior Dog Rescue & its Founder and CEO Sherri Franklin

Honored for: Helping senior dogs find homes and opening the door to animal companionship for older adults. Sherri Franklin is a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer. She founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. The organization is now a Bay Area favorite and a national model.

2022

Recipient: Louise Aronson, MD, MFA, Professor UCSF

Honored for: Her pioneering work in medicine and geriatrics. Louise’s book Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist and New York Times best seller, redefined the way we imagine aging. We appreciate Louise’s advocacy for elders in the healthcare field, her entrepreneurial drive for developing new ways to teach, and her generous spirit inviting AHWGO to be part of the innovative Age Self Care project.

2021

Recipient: The Community Living Campaign and its Co-Founder Marie Jobling

Honored for: Fostering the power and potential of friendship to transform lives and strengthen communities. Her activism, sense of humor and steadfast perseverance has made a lasting impact on how people age in San Francisco. Marie was one of six participants at AHWGO’s founding meeting in 2009, and she became a founding board member when AHWGO became a nonprofit in 2017; she is now a board member emerita.
